Working hard, or hardly working: three steps to becoming a better employee

With such a packed job market, hard work has seemingly become a commodity worth fighting over. Do you have what it takes to win employers over? Here are some questions to ask yourself to make sure you will: (1) How skilled are you, or how skilled are you willing to be? (2) Are you dependable? (3) Do you look happy to be at work? If you can answer “yes” to these three questions, you’re well on your way to catching the job of your dreams.
Working effectively is something that every employer admires. As James Turck (2014) said, “always increase the value of [your] real estate.” That is, improve on your skills and be willing to learn new ones. Your willingness to learn will make you a well-rounded and coveted employee (Salpeter, 2013, para. 6).
If you have an immaculate set of skills but never use them, your employer may look towards someone else to fulfill your duties (Turck, 2014, para. 32). You need to always give your job undivided attention and keep distractions at a minimum. If you’re wasting your own time, you’re wasting your employer’s time.
Always be aware that attitude matters. Optimism is “contagious” and by all means should be spread (Turck, 2014). Your coworkers and employers will love being around you if you lighten the mood with your presence.
Being a multi-skilled, dependable, and optimistic worker will always increase your worth in a company. With a little practice, these tips can become second nature to just about everyone. Work on bringing these to your career’s forefront, and you’ll be better off for it.
